Reflecting on their triumph, Tori Rubin, “Every one of those 19 athletes exhibited unwavering dedication to the team’s success. Their selflessness and meticulous attention to technique set them apart.” Flocheer 2022
The Cheerleading Worlds, an annual pinnacle of Allstar cheerleading hosted in America, draws teams worldwide to Florida’s ESPN Wide World of Sports. From humble beginnings with 14 teams in 2004, the championship now boasts over 500 teams and attracts over 10,500 All Star athletes from 25 nations annually.
Through the years, I’ve witness to the remarkable evolution of Unity Black. Attending their showcases and analysing their performances, I’ve watched them refine their technique and elevate their skill level each year, absorbing feedback from judges and honing their understanding of the global competitive landscape.
During the 2021-2022 season, their unprecedented presence on UK soil provided the platform for unison and cohesion. By their final performance on UK soil, they exuded an aura of invincibility, recognizing that while UK competitions served as a crucible for their skills, the ultimate goal lay in conquering Worlds.
Despite meticulous preparation, the unpredictable nature of cheerleading competitions means that success hinges on the performance day. Many teams have seen their dreams crumble on the Worlds floor despite stellar seasons.
Yet, on that fateful April day in 2022, Unity Black made history.
In 2006, Tori (co-owner of Unity Allstar gym) spearheaded the formation of Unity Allstars.
In 2009, Unity Black was formed, and Black’s debut at Worlds resulted in an 11th-place finish.
11 years later, Unity Black was crowned World champions.
To outsiders, Unity Black’s ascension may seem meteoric, but the Unity Allstar Program, and particularly Unity Black, has been about hard graft and pushing the limits of what is expected of athletes.
Unity Black laid the groundwork, contributing to the origin of the program and the growth of the Unity Allstar gym, now stands as the first English team to claim an Allstar division victory at Worlds. Their journey serves as a beacon of inspiration for generations to come.
